Sub or Dub

Sub or Dub

There are both advantages and disadvantages of sub watching an anime and dub watching an anime over each other. Lets first see who are sub watchers and dub watchers.

Who are Dub watchers?

Those who watch dubbed anime are dub watchers. Anime is avialable in two versions: dub and sub. Dub is the abbreviation of 'dubbed', but dub is more widely as it is easier to type.

Anime is dubbed mostly in English but also dubbed in Spanish, French and other fanous languages but rarely in Hindi. If your mother tongue is Hindi and you want to enjoy anime in your own language, that is rarely going to happen.

Who are Sub watchers?

Those who watch subbed anime (anime with subtitles) are sub watchers.
Anime is avialable in two versions: dub and sub. Sub is the abbreviation of 'subbed', but sub is more widely as it is easier to type.

Anime is subbed mostly in English but  subtitles are avialable in other languages too. As creating subtitles for an anime is way easier than dubbing an anime, fans can also provide good quality subtitles for anime in any language.

Disadvantages of watching Dub anime

If you watch dub anime then there are downsides of it too.

  • As anime is originally made in Japanese it is first released in Japanese and the sub version is avialable instantly but often dub is not avialable instantly, it takes some days.

  • Sometimes the dub version of an anime is never released. Imagine your sub watching friends recommend you a very delicious anime but you can not watch since you are a dub watcher.
Some OVA episodes of a famous anime 'Attack on Titan' have not been released in English dub yet, although its has been years since the release of sub version.

  • Language represents the culture also, not watching in original language stops you from experience that.

  • While dubbing some dialogues are also changed, reducing the originality.

  • If the signs are and songs are not translated then Dub watchers can not understand them or enjoy them fully.

  • This one is my personal opinion- The dub voices are over exaggerated, it seems like they are not talking normally. It makes the anime sound childish.

Disadvantages of watching Sub anime

  • Difficult to focus on action while reading subtitles.
  • You may miss an important scene which is important for the story. While reading the subtitles, your focus is on the bottom part of the screen.
If you are fast enough you may pay attention to central part of the screen where the main content usually is. But if something important is going on in the other parts of the screen, you will miss that.

Whether someone is a sub watcher or a dub watcher it doesn't matter, its all just a matter of perspective. You watch what you like, and DON'T SPREAD HATE.
